When It's Too Hot To Walk 
How To Stay Active And Beat The Heat

Is it too hot to walk in your neck of the woods? The heat makes it a challenge to get outside and walk. I don't know about you, but I do not enjoy exercising under the blazing hot sun!

I have some great tips for you so you can continue to exercise during the summer and beat the heat.

First, please know that even just a few minutes of exercise at a time counts. Yes, you heard that right! You don't have to go outside and walk for 30 straight minutes for it to "count" as exercise. If you can only take five minutes of walking in the heat, then that is better than not exercising at all.

Any time you are moving your body instead of sitting is time spent wisely. Just the act of getting up and moving instead of being sedentary can literally add years to your life and prevent long term, chronic health issues.

Tips For Exercising When It's Too Hot To Walk

  1. Go for a walk early in the morning. It's usually cooler in the morning so wake up early and get your walk in before it gets too hot. Remember, you don't have to walk for an entire 30 minutes, try getting up 10 or 15 minutes early and walking for that amount of time. 
  2. Walk after sunset. Does it cool off in your area when the sun goes down? That's a great time to walk? Yesterday, at dusk, I took the dog and my three boys out for a nice walk. A safety warning for women - always use your best judgement before choosing to walk alone at night (I always bring my dog with me).
  3. Exercise indoors. You can use a treadmill or even go to an indoor shopping mall and walk around. Remember, you don't have to be dripping sweat for exercise to "count". Just the simple act of moving your body is good for your health.
  4. Go for a swim. Swimming is great exercise! Just a few laps in the pool and my heart is pounding! Plus, you can make it fun if you have children.
  5. Buy a workout DVD and workout in the comfort of your home. Here are my favorite exercise DVD's.
  6. Don't have a gym membership? That's ok! Check out your local library. They most likely offer a few free exercise classes (in their air conditioned rooms!).

A few safety tips about exercising in the heat

  1. Drink water and stay hydrated.
  2. Try to stay in the shade if you can.
  3. If you are overweight or have other health issues, check with your doctor to make sure it is safe for you to exercise in the heat.
  4. If you don't feel well in the heat, stop! Find some shade, sit down and drink water.
