Solo Walking: How to Stay Safe and Enjoy Your Time

solo walking

Solo walking is a great way to escape the busy pace of life and make time for your thoughts. It allows you to do something great for both your body and mind.

The repetitive motion of putting one foot in the front of the other coupled with the passing landscape can quickly relax your body and mind. You’ll find that you feel more centered and able to focus on your thoughts.

There are many benefits, too. It helps to relieve stress but will leave you feeling energized. Use the time to go over your day and make mental notes about important things you need to do or remember. You can also use the time to plan out future activities.

There are a few extra safety precautions to take when exercising alone. These precautions will keep you safe so that you can focus on enjoying your walks.

Tell someone where you are going. You should also tell someone how long you will be gone. If you become hurt or injured and don’t return on time, you know that this person will immediately begin to look for you or summon the proper authorities.

Carry a mobile phone. If you have a mobile phone, bring it. You’ll be able to call for help if you need it.

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings. Do not get lost in conversation on your mobile phone. If you’re listening to music, keep the volume low so that you can hear the sounds around you. It is important to be aware of the people, animals and vehicle around you to stay out of harm’s way.

Walk on Designated Pathways. It is not the time to blaze new trails. Remain in areas that are designated for walkers. In fact, find areas where other people walk so that you are not alone if you become hurt or ill.

Carry a whistle. A whistle is great to have if you find yourself all alone and need to summon help. Carry it in your pocket or wear it around your neck.

These safety precautions aren’t meant to dissuade you from walking alone. But it is best to be prepared so that you can spend your time focusing on your thoughts and enjoying the benefits you are giving to your body and mind.

You may also want to mix in walking with others a few times a week or month. Walking with friends or with a walking group is a great way to connect with others and build relationships. Walking partners can help you stay motivated while encouraging you to meet and exceed your fitness goals.
