Hello! My name is Melissa and I am passionate about fitness walking. I live in sunny San Diego, California, where it’s almost always a good day for a walk.
From the time I can remember, I’ve always loved to walk. As a child I used to take walks with my family and enjoyed listening to my parents discuss their day. To this day, I find it very peaceful to be outside walking, listening and observing the sounds of nature and life around me.
The Journey Begins…
In my twenties, I joined a gym and hoped that it would help me get fit and trim down some of my problem areas. I faithfully went a few times a week and yet I never seemed to lose fat or build muscle. I now know that is because going to the gym was a chore for me, not a pleasure. And when you treat exercise as a chore, it’s hard to do it and you never have the motivation to push yourself to get results.
Five years ago, my husband and I took home a sweet little puppy…who quickly grew to be 100 pounds! This dog needed to be walked every day and I found that once again, I was doing something I loved and now I had a new friend to share my walks with.
Suddenly, my friends began to comment on how good I looked and wanted to know how I lost the weight. I was shocked! I wasn’t even trying to lose weight. I jokingly told them that my weight loss secret was my dog. That’s partly true, but the real secret was finding an activity that I loved to do.
Fitness Walking and Losing the Baby Weight
I went a bit wild when I was pregnant with my son and ate everything in sight :0 Although my doctors warned me not to do it, I just couldn’t resist. “It’s okay, you’re eating for two”, everyone told me. And so I did and gained over 45 pounds.
I took a 6-month maternity leave to enjoy my new baby. When he was 10 weeks old, my husband deployed overseas for 6 months. Suddenly, I was left alone with a fussy baby and my days stretched out endlessly.
To fight the boredom and loneliness, I started walking. Miraculously, my fussy baby loved being carried in the baby carrier! We walked every morning and evening. There were several nights when he could not be calmed and so I would put him in the baby carrier and head out for a walk. The rhythmic walking would soothe him and put him to sleep.
I’m sure I was quite a sight walking down the street – a baby strapped to my chest and a dog leash in each hand (we added another dog to our family soon after the first). But walking gave us the exercise, activity and change in scenery we all needed.
By the time I had to return to work, I couldn’t fit into my work clothes. Not because they were too small, but because they were too big! I actually lost more than the baby weight and weighed less than I had pre-pregnancy without ever dieting.
You can still find me every night walking with my son and two dogs. But now I push him in the stroller because he’s too big to carry. I am usually exhausted after working a full day and there are some days when I want to curl up on the couch, but most nights I look forward to walking with my family. And that’s the real secret to fitness and weight loss – finding your passion.
Why is that the real secret? One of my favorite quotes is by Confucius, which says “Find a job you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, I’d like to change this a little bit and say “Find an activity you love and you’ll never exercise a day in your life”. The key to weight loss and fitness success is to find something you love to do and are passionate about.
