New research leads to me believe it could! A Montreal Heart Institute (MHI) &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.news-medical.net/news/20121029/High-intensity-interval-training-makes-middle-aged-people-smarter.aspx&quot; target=&quot;_blank&quot;&gt;study&lt;/a&gt; led by Dr. Anil Nigam of the MHI and University of Montreal, in collaboration with the Montreal Geriatric University Institute found that interval training increased the participant's cognitive functions.

This was a small study so there needs to be more research to validate these results, but they are very exciting anyway. 

This study used six, overweight, middle-aged adults. They trained for four months doing two days a week of interval training and two days per week of resistance training. 

Cognitive function, VO2max and brain oxygenation during exercise testing revealed that the participants' cognitive functions had greatly improved thanks to the exercise,&quot; Dr. Nigam said. 

If people can receive these benefits from interval training on a bike, it is reasonable to believe that the same effects can be reached using interval walking. As long as you are following a high intensity interval program for walking in which you raise your heart rate then let it recover for a short time before starting the cycle again, you will most likely achieve the same benefits - getting smarter and fitter!
